Our Studio

The Artists’ Corner was formerly St Nicholas Anglican Church and has been specifically re-purposed into a working art studio situated in the lovely suburb of Waverley, Dunedin. The Artists’ Corner is located on the corner of Larnach Road & Dunrobin Street and caters for drawing, printing & painting workshops. We are well resourced and offer classes for all ages and abilities, across these disciplines.

Our goal is to ensure we provide a creative and enjoyable workspace to allow participants to pursue their artistic endeavors. We offer support to learn and develop technical skills so that confidence is achieved along side an understanding of materials and how best to use them.

History of the Church

We purchased the St Nicholas Anglican Church in September 2022 with the intention of renovating the Sunday School Hall into a working art studio and turning the church into our residence.

The St Nicholas Anglican church was built in 1956 and the Sunday School Hall built by Stone Construction in 1969. Over the years the building has been used by the church and community for a variety of purposes, from Sunday school classes to Saturday Morning music classes and termly afterschool care programmes.

Once renovated the spaces the building provides will enable The Artists’ Corner to run a range of weekly classes and have specialist workshops with guest art tutors from all over New Zealand. We have tried to retain the features of the building but modernize it so it can now be used again within the community.

My daughter participated in weekly after-school art classes with Jenny for 4 years. These 2-hour sessions were a favourite part of her week. She would liken going to Jenny's classes to visiting your favourite Aunts house, she always felt so comfortable and welcome. The mixed media and techniques that Jenny introduced her students to is so invaluable resulting in an amazing skill set. Jenny’s classes have created a lifelong love for art in my daughter.

I have really enjoyed Jenny’s life drawing classes. I’ve done both regular evening classes and full life drawing days, and very much enjoyed both. Jenny always takes you through some exercises to warm up, trying out different techniques and tricks, before giving you the freedom of some longer poses. She’s always on hand to help, but she also allows you space to do your work. Jenny also secured some great models to draw. Very much recommended.

Our two girls absolutely love going to Jenny's school holiday art classes. They ask to be booked in for the next one as soon as they get home, so as to never miss out. The array of experiences and teaching that Jenny provides in her classes is outstanding. The children come home excited with multiple pieces of work each day demonstrating their learning; making it clear the amount of energy, planning and expertise that Jenny puts into her work. This has provided the opportunity to experiment with many different techniques and processes. Jenny is always incredibly generous with her time, imparting of knowledge and use of her studio and materials.
