Jenny Sutherland

My name is Jenny Sutherland, I am a practicing artist as well as being a qualified primary school teacher and secondary school art teacher. I have also taught drawing for the Dunedin School of Art night classes, and have over a number of years taught a range of craft and book art classes throughout NZ, Australia and even in Paris. I graduated from Dunedin School of Art in 2013 and after teaching Art at Taieri College, established and ran Central Art Space in Lake Hawea for 5years before re-branding and relocating back to Dunedin. My art practice is mark making based, whether drawing or painting I am drawn to marks, textures and colour. I enjoy helping people learn and gain confidence with their individual art.

Amy Dougherty

Amy Dougherty is a practicing artist specializing in Print. Amy graduated from Dunedin School of Art in 2014 and completed her Honours, in 2023. Amy also teaches ‘Printing,’ night classes at the Dunedin School of Art. Sharing her skills and knowledge so that others can enjoy printmaking is Amy’s teaching motivation.

My daughter participated in weekly after-school art classes with Jenny for 4 years. These 2-hour sessions were a favourite part of her week. She would liken going to Jenny's classes to visiting your favourite Aunts house, she always felt so comfortable and welcome. The mixed media and techniques that Jenny introduced her students to is so invaluable resulting in an amazing skill set. Jenny’s classes have created a lifelong love for art in my daughter.

I have really enjoyed Jenny’s life drawing classes. I’ve done both regular evening classes and full life drawing days, and very much enjoyed both. Jenny always takes you through some exercises to warm up, trying out different techniques and tricks, before giving you the freedom of some longer poses. She’s always on hand to help, but she also allows you space to do your work. Jenny also secured some great models to draw. Very much recommended.

The array of experiences and teaching that Jenny provides in her classes is outstanding. This has provided the opportunity to experiment with many different techniques and processes.
